  • Too Fast? Yes. No shaping? Yes. An arrangement that Mahler never intended? Yes. Will 98% of these kids, ages 11-14 ever get to experience Mahler otherwise, or ever again? NO. You go, Kids!

  • I love honor band!! I was in the CMEA capital section 6th grade honor band!! It was a blast!

  • @Shota871

Exactly. I played this arrangement at honor band in 8th grade, and despite being it being my first introduction to Mahler, I can't help but shake my head at the sheer ineptitude of this arrangement.

  • Awsome! i remember playing this piece! its funny that i just now found it! lol, loved it here though! hope i can try to do this part again, but a high school version though! whoooooooooo honor band 2009! :D

  • @bassclarinetman21 I have to agree they are taking it to fast most of the time, but there again, its a middle school, and as a teacher myself, you never know what the circumstances are. These kids might just be lucky to be able to get all the accidentals right. Imagine the butterflies they get playing those FF markings... thats what its about at that age, getting the goosebumps at the beauty, then later hearing the real thing, and realizing why they love it.

  • @bc22233 This isa middle school group playing as close an arrangement of Mahler as is out there by publishers. Shame on anyone who says kids shouldn't have a chance to play good literature. This is actually a pretty decent arrangement for this age group. Kids don't spontaneously come out of the elementary schools loving this kind of music, if we make it accessible, maybe there's hope they might appreciate it to the point where they will pay for a symphony ticket 10 years later.

  • jees i just find this video and i find that i fin constant criticism. yes i know that this "arrangement" is an insult to mahler but you should just notice how it sounds and not how its originally supposed to sound. at least in this situation

  • ignoring the insults sitting on the stage it was beautiful experience and a wonderful way to express our emotions so dont talk about a middle and high school band from students all over california

  • It's the arrangement itself that is a huge insult to Mahler; I think it's sacrilegious to make "watered down" arrangements of anything by a composer who followed his heart and soul with every detail writing his symphonies to "be like the world" and "embrace everything." Listening to this is like taking all the sweets out of a candy or all the juice out of a steak.

  • Although this might be good for a middle school band, it is completely disrespecting Mahler by playing his music with a middle school band. As you can see they might play the notes on the page, but if one knew anything about this movement they would know that it is all about shaping. Not dissing the band, just the conductor or clinician.
