In the winter of 2004, nine crew members and I spent a whole day together in Beijing during one of my most memorable working layovers. We rented a van to see the different sites of interest around the Republic's cultural capital, notably the Forbidden City---the ancient heart of Beijing. Of course, we found time to shop in one of the largest markets nearby (a requisite stop for flight attendants), and break for some fresh, hot dumplings and beer. But the highlight of the trip was our visit to The Great Wall. We left our hotel at 4:30 in the morning in order to get to the wall by sunrise. Always a worthwhile effort, this is how I'd spotted my first shooting star a few years before, on my first trip to one of the ancient wonders. My greatest souvenir of that day? Perhaps more exciting than the refrigerator magnets and the leather knockoffs was this clip I took of my slide down the side of the Great Wall on a toboggan! Exactly how Genghis Khan did it, honestly!
