MaximsNewsNetwork: 01 December 2009 - UNTV: The UN meeting on South South cooperation gets underway in Nairobi as countries from the south assume leading roles in decisions on hot global issues ranging from economic recovery to food security and climate change.

The most important United Nations (UN) meeting on South South Cooperation in decades got underway today (1 December) at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, highlighting growing political and economic ties within the developing world.

As countries from the South assume leading roles in decisions on hot global issues ranging from economic recovery to food security and climate change, the conference seeks to promote and sharpen the benefits of mutual support among developing and transition economies, as well as maintain support for the process from the developed world through, triangular cooperation.

UN Development Programme Administrator Helen Clark said that this was a time of, "major challenges" to development and amid the global recession, food, fuel crises, climate change, and the influenza pandemic, the nations of the south need ready access to the most relevant knowledge and best practices for devising their own responses to these challenges.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro agreed that solutions to these and other ills require stronger cooperation, which should start with one's immediate neighbors.

The Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Amollo Odinga, noted that countries of the south are beginning to exchange and transfer technology among themselves but said that this cannot be to the exclusion of cooperation with the countries of the north, because this globe is one and therefore triangular cooperation is what we are now calling for.

The Conference, held on the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among developing countries (TCDC), consists of plenary meetings and interactive multi-sector stakeholder round tables and will produce an outcome document on Thursday.
