I thought Glory of Dancer was the bet of the year. Wrong. He finished ahead of Shaamit later in the year, so it wasn't a completely stupid idea. Just expensive.
dushyantor was so unlucky in this race,he got chopped up in running several times, had to pull wide, very unlucky, full brother to the 1993 derby winner commander in cheif
An exciting, but definitely non-vintage renewal. Alhaarth was probably the best horse in the race, which isn't saying much. Shantou, Glory of Dancer, Dushyantor and Shaamit were all good horses but not exactly world class.
Sure enough a very average Derby with half the field failing to cope with Epsoms undulations. But you do have to say that Shaamit did quicken up well and left his field well behind but for the final 1/2 furlong where his stamina was running out.
I watch this race occasionally for the sole purpose of torturing myself. I backed Dushyantor for the Derby as a foal (purely on pedigree obviously) and had a decent each way punt at 250/1. It was a very average Derby that year but I still consider him to be the unluckiest loser of the race since Dancing Brave, even if he could not be mentioned in the same breath in terms of ability. A lazy brute though, which cost him several positions in the race, and Eddery did well to finally get him running.
