Simply the worst blown call in football this year if not in football history. These ref's should never work another college football game again. NCAA rules state that even if a player makes an invalid signal, he still cannot advance the ball once he caught it.
Officials determined that the play was not reviewable.
The performance of the officiating crew in this game, however, is. And the Big East's commitment to dealing with these kinds of game-turning mistakes also is.
More to come. This botched call doesn't let U of L off the hook for the loss. It doesn't prevent questions about how what was the most potent offense in college football suddenly has ground to a halt.
What it means tonight is that there were two losers in this football game -- U of L and the Big East Conference.
And both have some major questions to answer.
Now, for your reading pleasure, the NCAA rule (italics mine) . . .
SECTION 7. Fair Catch
ARTICLE 1.
a. A fair catch of a scrimmage kick is a catch beyond the neutral zone by a player of Team B who has made a valid signal during a scrimmage kick that is untouched beyond the neutral zone.
b. A fair catch of a free kick is a catch by a player of Team B who has made a valid signal during an untouched free kick.
c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball, and the ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery or at the spot of the signal if the catch precedes the signal (Rule 6-5-1-a Exception).
d. If the receiver shades his eyes from the sun, the ball is live and may be advanced.
Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signalled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.
Invalid Signal
ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any signal by a player of Team B that does not meet the requirements of a valid signal (Rule 6-5-3).

its funny cause thats not a fair catch single. rasing your hand in the air does not count as a fair catch. and they just gave up on the play should have just went after him instead of jawing with the ref.
i think the waving motion iswhat makes it a fair catch not a hand in the air cause i see player put the hand in the air. and o point does he put his hand in a waving motion. hey im not hating im just saying what i see.
c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball, and the ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery or at the spot of the signal if the catch precedes the signal (Rule 6-5-1-a Exception).

All im gonna say is Louisville has no discipline cuz u gotta play til the whistle blows and this is just payback for a coupleopf years ago when they blew the call that favored louisville
no, that was not an accidental wave. Watch again. Also if I was head coach I'd order the next punt to be short, and clobber that guy before he even get the ball.
That was so shady... no freaking respect for the game.
His hand went up, waved and caught the ball. That move is to there protect the receiver. You may see it the other way and I respect your opinion, but when I watched the vid it looked like he intentionally waved but when the ref didn't call the play dead he took advantage, and that's a lack of integrity on his part (and following the rules). And I have seen enough football to know that any wave over the head count as fair catch. In that split second ref gotta call fair catch, again for protection
Maybe, maybe not. Just like KILLA23456789 said, if you do ANY kind of signals like that, it's a fair catch and should've been called. I don't think it was really shady though. What coach would risk such a costly penalty to try a move like that? I still think it's from loss of balance, but it should've been called.
