Trailer hits gas meter in Claremont.

A vehicle collided with the gas meter at BC Cafe this morning, causing officials to evacuate the restaurant and close down nearby streets.
About 9:20 a.m., a tractor trailer drove in the parking lot at 701 S. Indian Hill Blvd. and hit the gas meter, said Claremont police Sgt. Robert Rauchfuss.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was called to the scene after witnesses reported the smell of natural gas in the building. The Gas Company was also requested.

Traffic lanes on north Indian Hill, from the freeway and nearby side streets, were shut down.

Officials will have to dig a hole in the street to "tap off the line and make it safe," Rauchfuss said.

"It's a very strong smell," he said of the gas. "You can smell and hear it from a block away."

There were no reported injuries, said Michael Pittman, supervising fire dispatcher for the Fire Department.
