Such a loss! I always admired this wonder woman but, when she came out fists flailing, gloves off and stood up to the religious right when her friend Rock fell to the HIV virus, I was floored by her tenacity and guts. Just when the pompous haters (especially Washington & evangelics on the boob tube) were reloading, Liz came out with both guns blazing.
A "super star" with ethics and willing to tell the world the truth? YES!!
A great GREAT lady!

Joan Collins, Larry King, Morgan Fairchild? They knew Elizabeth Taylor but I don't think they were nearly as close as some other people.

Long before anyone had ever heard of AIDS, Elizabeth Taylor had a huge gay following because she was beautiful and talented and had a huge heart.
Much has been made of the fact that Elizabeth Taylor helped bring AIDS to the American consciousness because of her friendship with Rock Hudson. A lot of people forget that she was gay-friendly way before that. When actor Montgomery Clift was deeply closeted, Taylor was a best friend and confidante.

Taylor and Clift co-starred in several movies, most notably A Place in the Sun, where they made one of the most stunning couples in movie history (Clift was a former model). The movie is a Turner Classic Movie (TCM) favorite. They also starred in Suddenly, Last Summer, which is ironically about closeted homosexuality. Taylor did a wonderful tribute to Clift for TCM, where she tells of "secrets" they shared which the public will never know.

Both Elizabeth Taylor and Dr. Mathilde Krim have been affectionately called, "The Fairy's Godmother." And for those who don't know, designer Kenneth Cole is straight and married but very involved in gay and progressive causes. His wife is the sister of ABC journalist Chris Cuomo and NY Governor, Andrew Cuomo.
