@TaisinViper this wasnt only driving the Bud. Before the changes in safty a crash almost always ment death in Unlimited Hydroplane Racing. The all time favorite and probably the best Bill Muncy was killed in the Atlas Van Lines. there have been zero deaths after the canopy on the hull. before the canopy no seat bealt no cover as the thought was it was better to be tossed from the boat then to have it land on top of you. Water at that speed is like cement not fun to hit. you were over siplified.
@bjordanhotmail Sorry to be late on this however there is a number of video postings of this flip. People cheered for a couple reasons. The new canopies were no longer new so we were suprised when Villwock was hurt. Racing was much less safe when the drivers didnt wear seatbelts and had no canopy. Secondly While the fans loved the Ms. Bud Many did not care for Villwock as the driver. The flip ment Vilwock would not win (again). I know this as I have followed the races for over 40 years.
@therayveneffect True about the love/hate relationship with the Bud. I just uploaded my footage of the Miss Elam riding on top of the Bud in 1998. Perhaps the Elam thought the Bud could carry her to victory? ;)
Ive seen them testin them before and they but to much of a angle on the front so when it bounced the air cought and the but submerged about 10 foot under the water i have footage but i cant show becouse it wasent painted but it was a major company by thare trailer and asked not to show it so i wont..
if u eliminate sponson walking and fliping ur taking away speed and the thrill of the sport... its a hydro"plane" they are built to fly across the top of the water if u do all that u got a boat prob only doin 140.....
Aerodynamics. Strangely, it is still not understood that controllable stability is obtained by substantially unbalancing aerodynamic forces to the rear of the craft. This has been demonstrated by, amongst others, F-15 etc. etc. and ALL the most successful land and water speed record holders.....sometimes at a fraction of the cost. Sponson walking and flipping will (must) disappear altogether if this is understood and applied. Why it's not is quite beyond me.

Dave Villwock was pretty injured, but only lost three fingers in his right hand. He's still racing, though, with the Miss E-Lam team.
