Since 2008 a consortium of 11 European carmakers, suppliers and research institutes including BMW Group Research and Technology have been working together on a research project to develop interactive driver assistance systems. BMW's "left turn assistant" aims improve safety at low-visibility intersections. It activates automatically as soon as the car's sensor detect that it is entering the left-turn lane and the car registers the driver's wish to turn off. Other car-to-X applications include the Intersection Assistant, Traffic Light Assistant, Local Hazard Warning, and the Emergency Vehicle Warning.

Left Turn Assistant: Car drives at a main stress, car wants to turn left. motorcycle driving towards the car frontally, ,
Motorcycle increases visibility through flashlight and honking the horn, Motorcycle passes on, then the car turns left.
Intersection Assistant: Car drives at the side street as well as Motorcycle crossing on major road, car driver would
oversee motorcycle driver, through „flashlight" and honking the horn the motorcycle driver increases his visibility, car
brakes, motorcycle passes him.
Local Hazard Warning: Motorcycle drives on a road, doesn´t see loose chippings and begin to lurch a little bit while
driving.
Car drives over loose chippings; the successive Motorcycle gets the warning and can circumnavigate those carefully.
Emergency Vehicle Warning: Driver is driving on a street, ambulance is advancing from behind -- driver let him pass
accordingly, because he has been warned right in time from his car that an ambulance is nearing.
Traffic Light Assistant: Traffic Light with communication unit for the car--to--infrastructure-communication. Car drives
towards traffic light, traffic light is red. BMW driver brakes.

  • interesting tech. but what is the reaction time of the driver? this was just a clip, not reality, so it is kinda hard to understand it. for example in the one with the emergency vehicle, do they not have sound in that country? the driver had to look at the sign then the mirror, then pull over..

idk. the tech does seems useful, but once again we need the reaction times. If i am driving, and a person cuts me off, my reaction time will be much longer as i have to do two things [i have to confirm]

  • nice .
