The Philippines has been besieged by tragedy after tragedy. Ondoy, Pepeng, and Typhoons Ramil. And if these were not enough, the recent Maguindanao massacre has placed the country in a very ugly spot.

The recent naming of Filipino, Efren Penaflorida as CNN Hero for 2009 could'nt have come at any better time. May we be inspired by this noble Pinoy's selfless action in serving his fellowmen and determined attitude to keep moving FORWARD.

Hardships and poverty should not hinder and define our lives. Instead, let us rise above in ANY situation. Face each challenge with a firm resolve that this too shall pass and I, the true Filipino will come out as a winner - in life!

There are heroes within us, as Efren said. We know its true.

Ang tunay na Pinoy ay dakila, marangal at masigasig. Huwag nating hayaang madungisan ng ililang masamang halimbawang kababayan and ating pangalan. Tayong lahat - bawat isa ay may tungkulin sa ating bayan.

A true Filipino is noble, honorable and persevering. Let us not allow the few bad apples among us to taint our reputation and shape our destiny. All of us - each and everyone has a duty to our country.

I never imagined that even before Efren was feted with honor, his reach was so expansive with the unfortunate kids.

I believe Efren's mission was comparable that of Gandhi.
