Yes, 3 to 5 minutes is common, and he may have mentioned that in the fast-forwarded section, but notice what a tough time he's having pushing the plunger down - at one point he gets stuck. Remember to use a course grind in your press pot.

Isn't he supposed to let the coffee and water steep for a few minutes before pushing the filter down on the french press?

I agree, but I also agree with the editor that listening to everything Mike says at normal speed can sometimes be even more annoying. Considering how much good coffee info they packed into that Modern Marvels program, I don't mind them hurrying Mike along. I thought it was more funny than annoying.
