Worlds largest rotative beam pumping engine. Built in 1865 by the James Watt Co.
Part of Joseph Bazelgettes intercepting sewer system of 1865, Crossness pumping station in SE London houses 4 such engines only one of which is restored and running. At the start of the film you see a small "baring" engine, used to position the large beam engine prior to starting. Crossness Pumping station also has a very decorative cast iron interior, as can be seen in this film. For more info or to arrange a visit please visit www.crossness.org.uk

  • Thank-you for a delightful video. Was the engine actually built new as a compound, or was it compounded at a later date?

  • The engine were intalled in 1865 as single cylinder James Watt Co. engines. They were later compounded in 1899 to 3 cylinders by the Benjamin Goodfellow company in Cheshire.

    Thanks for your interest
