Wagner - The Mastersingers of Nuremburg - Act III Quintet 5 May 1957 Joan Sutherland - Jon Vickers - James Pease - Noreen Berry - John Lanigan Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden Conductor: Rafael Kubelik
This almost makes me wonder if she took the wrong road with the bel canto school. I always wondered why she sounded plummy later in life. Does anyone else think she sounds in her absolute element here?
A very beautiful performance from all 5. But to have voices of the beauty and caliber of Sutherland and Vickers singing this music is a rare treat. Even the greatest German sopranos don't ride that phrase up to the final Bb with such ease and amplitude.

Stunning! Kubelik is the most lyrical of all Wagnerians, the orchestra is so beautiful-sounding. And THEN he has the best cast imaginable--wow.

Magical. Let's hope the entire recording will be made available soon.

@Homoclassicus If I'm not mistaken, this was a studio shot of her as Donna Anna.

That's a beautiful photo. Do you know which role Sutherland was in when they took that photo?
