@BlackShinobiShozoku @apryor2006 if uke slides their foot back then they are massively off balance to their front corner so just switch to hikkikomi gaeshi or sumi gaeshi. Osoto gake (or osoto gari with an over the shoulder belt grip) is a "classic" set-up for these sutemi waza in shiai. If you step in deeply *you* are off balance backwards. Try something right now: try to push a wall over, do you have your feet right up against it? Of course not: You lean into it from a distance, same for osoto

Either way, if you hook or sweep it is very easy to defend by the Uke either sliding his leg back or picking it up depending on whetheer you want to dump him on his face or back. I think a better way to apply it is to step behind the Uke's leg and turn away while pulling him over your outstretched leg in a tripping motion. Much harder to defend against.

I don't see how this would work... The Uke weight wasn't on the leg being hooked. Uke was being very generous.

Osoto gake works just as well as osoto gari, but they're used in different situations.

i think it's an O Soto Gake (not gari) but this technique isn't very effective in comparison to an O Soto Gari
