EXCELLENT soprano.... but not here. Bad choice. :// I don't know if it was for the fun of it,but my opinion is that singing wrong repertoire can give you much trouble in your voice...it's wrong.

Actually, Leontyne's voice was more suited to Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Strauss, especially the latter when the line soared. Much of Wagner sits low and as she aged her middle became more and more labored, even hoarse at times. On the other hand, give her something higher in tessistura like that Aegyptische Helena piece at Carnegie Hall around 1991 where, despite her age, she is absolutely sublime.

Leontyne might not have made a career out of Wagner, but she could definitely sing Wagner beautifully. Did she not sing in concert the Liebestod from Tristan Und Isolde so beautifully it brings tears to your eyes ? Did she not sing in recital the Love Aria of Sieglende from Walkure ? She sang the Salome finale which also many Wagnerian divas did (Nilsson, Rysanek)...so yes she was a fine Wagnerian, this Dich Teure Halle was sublime...wow

She did fine. You gotta figure when people expect you to program the same 20-30 pieces your whole life you have to spice things up a bit. She does get that sort of Verdian swooping quality in there where it doesn't belong from time to time, but that's idiomatic for this artist. Saying she shouldn't be singing this because she's not a heldensoprano is like saying I shouldn't eat Chinese food because I'm not Chinese.

To all who criticised her here. She sings this still much better than special Wagnerian sopranos, who very often lack any emotional movements and their singing is so boring.... Viva La Price !!!

VERY GOOD performance!!! Thank you very much for sharing this clip of a couple of fine artists and an OUTSTANDING orchestra in its "summer home" (the Ravinia Festival).
