  • I'm sorry but the rod down the middle is flint, the silver block is magnesium :)

  • The block itself is magnesium. I have a similar block that I got with a multi tool...

  • When grinding or polishing magnesium, special care must be taken to avoid ignition of fine particles: fine dust should be collected in water-washed dust collectors. Use water to cool the magnesium.

  • Sawing: Magnesium can be cut with hand or power saws. The set of teeth on band saws and hacksaws must be relatively circular. Relief angles on the teeth of circular saws must be adequate to minimize friction. Magnesium requires only one-tenth the power required for sawing soft steel. Powder hacksaws are commonly used for sawing magnesium and can be operated at speeds as high as 160 strokes per minute, using a feed of 0.38 mm (0.015 in.) per stroke. Power band saws are operated at 365 m/min.
