  • Why are you ignoring the premise of the hypothetical? There isn't any point in answering if you don't accept the premise. It all comes down to verbal masturbation.

The point of the question isn't whether you'd do that INSTEAD of getting them help. That's why it's excluded with the premise.

  • I didn't really ignore it. I just looked beyond it. Maybe it defeats the purpose, but I guess what I was trying to say is that praying with them would be at the bottom of the list of things I could do. I would not and could not accept prayer as the first solution.

  • Because if I don't say anything, and lead them to believe that I believe in what I'm doing, I'm lying about what I believe, therefore surrendering my beliefs. On the other hand, if I say I'm an atheist and don't believe in prayer, I can busy myself with more important things like getting them help.

  • really? So if you could save their life, but instead they wanted you to pray for them and they died...you find that better? I don't get it. I'm heartless for wanting them to live?

  • That is heartless as a human being in my opinion.I agree with the athiests who say they wouldn't think twice to pray if that gave comfort to another human being.I do not see where it is compromising at all. It is being an extremist just like the extremist christians but in reverse.Where is the compassion? there is none in my opinion to deny this wish from a dying person.None.Very sad. very very sad. Joanne

  • I'm with you based on the initial question to say that "are they savable?" Great response. Thanks.

  • Why would praying with someone surrender your beliefs. Praying is a meaningless act. If you are trying to comfort someone, why would performing a meaningless act bother you. If they asked you to sing a song, or cradle them, or tell them a joke or tell them they look good: all more or less meaningless to you, but maybe significant to someone who needs it. Now I probably would try to correct any false impression after the crisis.
