I think that's the whole point. The dark side clouded his judgment. He underestimated Obi wan. He really kicked his own ass. When Anakin talked about being ahead of Obi wan He probably was. When employing his skills learned as a Jedi, But right here he was letting hatred take over and emotion, fighting as a sith. Only after his legs were cut off did Obi Wan allow himself to show some emotion when trying to grapple with what became of his friend and pupil.
