In 2010, we followed Business Economics seniors Ben Laflin of Farmingdale, Maine and Kori Warren of Dixfield, Maine as they did their student internship at the Maine Dept. of Health & Human Services (DHHS) MaineCare Division in Augusta, located 40 minutes from campus. The internship is arranged through the Maine Health Research Institute, directed by Farmington Professor of Business Economics Dr. Sheen Bunnell. The University has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Maine DHHS and the agency has employed a number of Farmington interns over the years. Under the guidance of their on-site supervisors, Emily Bean and Carol Bean, Ben and Kori gained valuable hands-on experience as they applied the statistical analysis and other economics theories they learned in the classroom to real-world projects in the growing health care field. At Farmington, all students are encouraged to participate in internships like this as a way for students to put classroom theory into practice while strengthening their resume and making valuable professional contacts. In fact, in any given semester, about 70% of all Farmington students are participating in some sort of hands-on learning experience. Because of this, Farmington offers a number of opportunities that will help you connect your classroom studies to what could be your future work. It should also be noted that Maine DHHS Supervisor Emily Bean is a recent Farmington graduate (Community Health Education) who also interned at the DHHS while a student. She was hired by the agency shortly after graduation.
