Zdravko MUCIC, one of the four accused in the first indictment dealing with Bosnian Serb victims (issued on 22 March 1996) was turned over to the Tribunal on Tuesday 9 April 1996.

MUCIC arrived at about 9.30 a.m. at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, accompanied by Austrian police, and was immediately transferred to the Tribunal's Detention Unit. His initial appearance hearing will take place on Thursday 11 April at 2.30 p.m., before Trial Chamber II, presided over by Judge McDONALD.

MUCIC is charged with COMMAND RESPONSIBILITY for GRAVE BREACHES of the Geneva Conventions and VIOLATIONS OF THE LAWS AND CUSTOMS OF WAR perpetrated in his capacity as Commander of the Celebici camp in the Konjic municipality in central Bosnia and Hercegovina between May and November 1992. He is thus liable under Articles 2, 3 and 7(3) of the Tribunal's Statute.

MUCIC is held responsible for the crimes committed by his subordinates namely: murder of at least 14 detainees; at least 7 acts of torture, including 2 rapes; at least 5 cases of causing great suffering or serious injury; at least 3 cases of inhumane acts, including forcing persons to commit fellatio with each other; unlawful confinement of the detainees in inhumane conditions.
He is also charged with having directly participated in the plunder of property belonging to the detainees contrary to Article 3 (e) of the Statute.

MUCIC, who was born on 31 August 1955, was apprehended in Vienna by Austrian police on 18 March 1996, at the request of the Tribunal pursuant to Article 40.
