In fact the elves don't even go to helms deep in the books.

@Jontotherescue96 ahh yes..those of us of a 'certain age' who can read..I also was affronted by the arrival of the elves! It didn't happen!' .. I cried!..Those cosy lounge lizard elves hiding in the forests whilst the brave and badly armed men of Rohan fought for their lives!..made for a good film though, and Haldir's character 'stood in' for both his own and Glorfindel's..who, we must admit, was a bit of a prick..

As a reader of lotr before the films came out I was almost disgusted when the elves arrived at Helms deep and it almost made the victory a victory for the elves and not the men of rohans courage as it should have been. But in a way, Haldirs death is one of the most moving parts of the two towers, even though it shouldnt have happened.... im in a middle earth pickle :/
i think his death made the public sympathise more with his character. he was an elf, he wasn't supposed to die so it makes people think more about the wars affects on life.
