Georges Bizet wrote Carmen for the Paris Opera Comique, and thus the original version had dialogue. The Comic Opera Guild, which traditionally performs Comic Operas in English, thus felt comfortable producing this version, in a translation by Michael Irwin. Not all Operas Comique were comedies, but were usually more realistic in nature than the works produced at the Grand Opera, because of the spoken word. This production, from 2000, was set during the 1868 rebellion in Puerto Rico rather than Spain by director Brad Rondeau. It is conducted by Timothy Semanik.
As the crowd enters the arena to witness the Escamillos bullfighting exhibition, Don Jose (Brian Pfaltzgraff) accosts Carmen (Monica Bebow) to make her return to him. Deploring his newly pathetic condition, and enchanted by Escamillo, she spurns him. With nothing else to live for, Jose kills Carmen and invites execution.
