probably because he lived outside of London for the majority of his life. That and he filmed most of his films in England as well.

He was born in Manhatten. Born American.
He spent the last 40 years of his life in Britain. So he was a european legally, but he was an American in reality. He never adopted a stupid accent, which makes me happy, because England gets all of the best people ever, and America has the best director ever!
