This is Chepstow Classic Buses Bristol VR UFX 856S (caption in video is incorrect, should be 856!) seen operating on the Winkleigh West of England Transport Collection open day. This VR is quite possibly the best sounding VR I have ever been on! What a glorious noise.

  • Surely UFX 856S? Sounds just as good as she did when I drove her on the IOW as WDL655. Happy days !

  • @treviow Whoops, quite right! Well spotted, thanks. What a treat that would have been on the Isle of Wight, unbeatable!

  • Can't beat a good loud exhaust on a VR. Shame about the wind noise but there'snowt you can do about that of you want to get the full noise. It could be one of the few VRs left with a system made by Commercial Exhausts like Southdown 603 (search "603 gurlging away" on Brighton VR on flickr)

  • @taxus750 Thanks for that link, have had a look, what a beauty! It is amazing how much of a difference there is dependent on the exhausts fitted. Indeed, wind noise is such a pain, you can never get totally rid of it!

  • You can't beat a gurgling VR!

  • @BristolVRchap You simply cannot! What a noise!

  • Lovely ! Loved these when they were in service, at the back downstairs next to the emergency exit, right foot on the wheelarch, best seat in the house !!!

  • The sound of this engine would set off car alarms in the near vicinity with a delicate blip on the gas. Some spectacular sound effects could be achieved when negotiating a narrow stretch bounded by brick walls !! 504 (as numbered with Southern Vectis) is featured on the Videoscene production "Return Ride on the isle of Wight". Oh, and I just could have been driving her on one of the scenes :-)

  • Oh yes! Just how a VR should sound. Perfection.
