I recently posted an email interview with William Gray, the actor who played the role of Bobby Benson in the original version of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, on my blog - The Crotchety Old Fan. William 'Billy' Gray starred alongside Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Sam Jaffe, who portrayed Dr. Barnhardt.

That role was meant to evoke Dr. Albert Einstein, the scientific genius who was a stand-in for all scientists during the era of the film.

Mr. Gray stated in the interview that the message delivered by the film is still relevant today (that mankind needs to get a handle on its tendancy to self-destruct) and apparently reprised Sam Jaffe's role in support of that contention.

This clip was provided by Allen Chance, who has granted me permission to post this to YouTube.

The clip has a rather long blank intro - please bear with it. If you are as interested in the film The Day The Earth Stood Still as I am, it will be worth the wait.

  • Man, still such a good actor.

  • I might still suck his cock; but back in the day; oh yeah.

  • Mr. Gray's talent is most under-rated. A fine actor that generations of viewers have been deprived of seeing.

  • Fantastic! Gray even resembles Sam Jaffe to an extent in this video. Bravo Bill!

  • wtf????

  • No video or audio

  • so he WAS zapped by gort

  • Billy ...we need to see you on the screen now and then. More often ! You are too good an actor !! This was AWESOME !!! (Loretta )

  • @elizroberts According to the other interview, he didn't even have any grass. Just some seeds and stems. The media then as now exaggerated it to epic porportions.

  • Wow. Based on this clip I have to say he is a terrific actor. Out of the business since 1962 because of a marijuana bust! What a tragedy. He could get roles now, I bet - good ones. This is another example of how idiotic drug laws have ruined people's lives. I am flabbergasted that someone who is this good an actor could have been out of the public eye for so long. However, who knows what Hollywood would have done to him. But now he should go back into acting. He might achieve great fame yet!
