XP can't recognize the hard drive because your laptop uses a serial ata (SATA) interface rather than the older IDE interface. Your Windows XP disc does not include drivers for the SATA controller, and therefore sees no drive.
You will have to create a windows XP disc with the drivers integrated or use a USB floppy to load the drivers at "press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver"
Press F6, load the drivers and continue on your way.
