!!!
This video is part of a playlist featuring all the version released so far. It is likely that this one has been obsoleted. Check http://www.youtube.com/user/z0rb1n0#p/c/F61F638B73ED353C for more details)
!!!

Started as a scrapwork, now it's half a project (open-source).
(See http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=177502 for details).

This is a database-driven rendering of the star cluster acting as a EVE Online's game environment.
Final result would be an eye-candy-ish, animated version of our beloved sov map (http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/verite/influence.png) shown the way we see modern weather forecasts (camera focus on sudden changes in sovereignty borders, explosion-burst effects where major fleet combats took place etc...).

It's less colorful than previous version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfiLpoPg86U) because I'm now using actual spectral classes for stars (I actually prefer this new, "milky" look).

Oh, btw: jump network and region names added (the former barely noticeable if you don't go HD).

Software stack: Linux-Postgresql+Blender+Python+mencoder

Music: X-Ray Dog - Darkness (cut by me)

EVE Online is a trademark of CCP Games

Thanks to Mitchell Charity for his spectral class datasheets.

Hope you like it.

  • Looks great, can't wait for sov to be put in. :D

  • @Mavrik347

Er, a few weeks ago I moved to New Zealand; I was about to post 0.1.0 (Sov. events, Influence areas, redesigned data-fetching system etc...), but there's more job to be done and at the moment I'm struggling with logistics plus I don't have enough spare time.

I think it will take a while...

  • It was just if it actually took you 60 seconds to record it :-) Or it took an hour and then increased the playback speed.

Hope did you obtain the influence map data? Its just a picture. Did you analyse the image and retrieved the data you needed?

  • @AEjlersen83

It's not recorded. It's rendered with an open-source 3d suite.

On my crappy hardware it takes about 28 mins at 1280x720

3d data is database-driven (no raster analysis involved, lol).

Even if it was the case, you may also ask how THEY (the guys behind the "classic" map) obtain influence data :-).

Static data (star cluster "topografy" and jumps) comes from a static SQL dump provided by CCP after each release. Ever changing influence and stats can be fetched via XML API services

  • @z0rb1n0: Great thanks. Did not know that you could get the influence map data. Well, good bye picture analysis code :-)

How is the influence map coming along? I'm working on basically the same, but in Unity3D. It's not as pretty as yours, but lets face it. I'm not a graphics guy.

  • @AEjlersen83 Lol, i'm glad you like it, but who do you think I am? The "pretty-ness" you're talkin' about is just a bit of parameters based on CCPs luminosity values and actual spectral data charts. Nature itself is pretty already, don't you agree? :-).

However, CCP doesn't provide "influence" data. They give out an XML with sovereignty mappings for each system.

"Influence" is not an EVE abstraction but a concept invented by original map builders ^^

  • @SeditiousSpyke good news then. I'm about to start phase 3 (sovereignty "cotton candy translucent balloons") in about 10 days

  • @z0rb1n0 True true... But back to your EVE map, how is it coming along?

  • @AEjlersen83

what do you mean with "realtime"? In the new version it will show influence areas / overlaps the way they are in the very moment each frame is rendered, but once the video is out, you know, it's just a video :-)

  • I'm curious. Is the video realtime?

  • Keep up the good work!!
