As far as i'm aware after 20 years in the boat building industry, jet type propolsion looses some hp throught the actual jet unit(approx. 5-10%) as opposed to a prop and shaft set up.
Also, jet units stir up a lot more sand when used in shallow water and have a tendancy to clog up water cooling inlets and overheat engines.
In my opinion the jet unit is great for high speed turning and a lot safer for swimmers. Aside from that give me a prop any day.
