I believe because my house is haunted and something or someone picked me up and carried me to the front of my house in the middle of the night so I believe their story
I didn't read the book. I can't recall anything about friends of the children or gravitating nightly. This was juiced up for TV. I truly believe the Lutzes went through something that science can't explain. I could see people wanting to discredit this story because they feel it's not an authentic case, but the people that look to discredit it are most likely atheists and intellectuals who simply can't concede there's a power greater than them.
I've heard about this 'toilets spewing out a black tar-like substance' a number of times. There's a reasonable explanation for it: Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of having this happen knows it occurs when the town/city occasionally flushes the sewer pipes. It's happened to us (it's thick and smells and even had us thinking it was tar).
I think figuring out how and what happened the night of the murders is more baffling

Actually the book explicitly says the boys never had time to make friends as they were only there for 28 of the coldest days of the year.

My opinion about this documentary:
Some facts pepped up with much spooky-hooky stuff, backedup by so-called witnesses, who simply repeat once practiced statements.

The name of the guy who did the 911 call was not Kelsko or howsoever, but YESWIT (just google Joe Yeswit he even spelled his name several times).

Vintage press accounts say that the 1974 value of the house the DeFeos bought in 1965 was
75 000 Dollars. The Lutz's paid 80 000 Dollars just one year later. A real good bargain; - isn't it? Even 5000 Dollars more than estimated.
