Shot around Ship Bottom, New Jersey on Long Beach Island around 1am and 8am on August 28th, 2011 to show the effects of Hurricane Irene.

UPDATE (10:51am)- My father traveled down to Beach Haven, much of the BLVD is flooded, ocean road is "ok". Cops won't let you go through yet but apparently the bridge will be open for residents "later on"- no time given. For all the latest information - follow me on Twitter or add me on Facebook! Nick Hertzberg, @thatfellownick

Notes: I know much of the intro footage is dark, my aperture on my camera is small and lighting was obviously not great. However, I felt showing it with the rain pelting down and winds whistling would let you know how intense it was outside during the "peak" of the storm for us.

My report: we made out rather well, from what I have seen. There is some (as seen in the video) branches down, cables down, broken fences, broken business signs, broken street signs and of course flooding- but from what I saw (4th through 25th street Ship Bottom) - the flooding is nothing that we have not seen before. The police are trying to keep cars off the Blvd because of flooding, but once again, it is not like this island doesn't flood in certain areas without the power of a hurricane.

WE DID NOT LOSE POWER- AT ALL!

The dunes held up incredibly well. You can tell the ocean came up to the dune fence but not much further. Some sand goes into the street but only for about 10 feet and very lightly.

The scariest part must have been the tornado warnings that came through, but the storm never overall was that crazy. I stayed up until 3am and then took a few naps, getting back up at 7am to shoot this.

The bay is apparently going to still rise a bit- so flooding will persist and I imagine the bridge will be closed until tonight or tomorrow at least.

Feel free to contact me, I will try to get information out as best I can- for I am being told I am one of the only LBI "news sources" currently.

Stay safe- will come with another update if need be.

  • Nick im sorry i dont have a twitter it wont let me log in to my old acount... Thnx for the update on 4th.. Anything on fantesy island?

  • @TrackStar2596 fantasy island was under a good amount of water earlier on, i did not go directly past, but the whole area was. however, a good majority of water went down in my time out and about-- it should be okay, unless the bay went back up around 8pm like it was supposed to...not sure of this at this time

  • Thanks so much for getting this out. The news has nothing on LBI. I'm in CA, and glad to know our little island survived.

  • @jajaamos no problem at all! we persevere !

  • hey thanks for shootin that - my kids were worried - did the meltdown down by the mariner and m&m seafood get hit bad??

  • @bam1424 most of beach haven was under water at some point but now is not so bad. the bay however, might have crept back up a little bit around 8. not sure at this point

  • ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE \m/

  • @thatfellownick

Nice music to go with the theme lol

  • That reminds me it is located in Beach Haven at 33rd street right near Howard's Restaurant.

  • I'm curious to know if my Mom's shore was flooded. She passed away in March 2011 suddenly and her sisters decided to sell the house. My family and I have no claim to it and right now I'm kinda glad so we don't have to deal with the damage.

  • Thank u very much... U were brave to go out and shoot these videos while im on the mainland and was terrified...

  • @sbarry072561

went past Joey's about 7pm tonight and there was water up to the door. return to BH Inlet and things are remarkably good--no power outage but lots of erosion. We had way more damage in Essex county than down here.
