Echocardiography, or the use of ultrasound to the examine the heart, has become a standard of diagnostic technology for patients with heart disease. Now, thanks in part to a donation from the 16th Annual Great West Life Charity Golf Classic, a new ultrasound will make cardiac patient care in southern Saskatchewan better than ever.
"The beauty of echocardiography is that its very non-invasive technique", explains Dr. George Garbe, a cardiologist with the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. "Its a very safe, easy, simple, non-invasive study for our patients. We can see the heart beating, the size of the heart, the thickness of the chambers and can get tremendous amounts of information on how the heart muscle is functioning. There is no pain, no needles and a beautiful picture comes out."
The Region is hoping to replace three older, 200-lb. units with the more technologically advanced units, providing sharper pictures to the physicians for diagnosis and treatment.
