For many years, technology industry experts considered it a mistake to put touch on vertical screens, especially like those on clamshell devices. They believed that people would find it awkward, uncomfortable and increase wear and tear on devices. Here, Daria Loi talks about recent user experience test results that contradict those notions. Loi, a user experience manager at Intel, shares why people said they want touch on their laptops and how they used it.

I don't get the excitement here. Touch on a laptop doesn't seem any different to using a mouse to me. So painful to watch. Do these new systems forgo the quick-key navigation methods?

I feel the excitement here but I don't believe it will become adopted by any critical mass. Fingers crossed anyhow ; )

Is there an actual paper on this study on how it was performed? I like using tablets, but also like using the touchpad (i.e. not screen) and still can't see anyone raising their arm to use the touchscreen unless it's physically setup in a 'tablet' mode.

Your video largely showed footage of surfing the internet, which is largely a consumptive experience, and something you don't need a keyboard much for in the first place.

Poor sales of windows 8 / surface back up my thoughts that this is BS.

I think this would appeal more to teens and upcoming generations because they will be even more exposed to the whole touch screen system and they are able to adapt fast to new technology.

They really had to do a survey to figure out people want a keyboard? I'm using a win 8 touch system to enter this. Win 8 on a Laptop is a time waster. I can see it on a tablet but add a keyboard and all the touch features just get in the way. Sure, if you want to type "Pizza" under a photo your just swiped from a website, great. If you want to get some real work done, win 7- is just fine in my book.

Touch is such a gimmick. It makes sense on phones, but on laptops it's just plain retarded.

Why are so many people down voting this video? I thought that it was extremely thoughtful and well done.

Touch MUST come to laptops. It adds that extra dimension to laptops that makes using them enjoyable. Can't wait for touch-enabled Windows 8 laptops.
