definitely. very effective for athletes train with unstable surfaces, moving surfaces or unexpected forces i.e. defender.

I am guessing that the sloshing water adds more difficulty to these exercises.

Have you trried 2/3rd's filling a swiss ball with water and then cleaning and pressing it?

@damuschka yeah! that's some heavy shit! it definitely gives a different stimuli. The difference with the sand is that it is heavier and more stable. but since it is heavier, it definitely has a stronger pull when you switch directions! :)
