Forecasters say a tornado that tore apart a family's two-story farmhouse near Reserve, killing two, is one of the most powerful twisters ever recorded in the state. The National Weather Service says Monday night's tornado was two to three miles wide with winds estimated at 150 mph. The twister is only the fourth in Montana's history powerful enough to achieve a rating of EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
It's the deadliest to hit the state since 1923. The tornado killed 10 year-old Robert Richardson and 46-year-old Steven Smith. Richardson's grandmother, 71-year-old Barbara Smith, was injured and last listed in serious condition. One of the first people to arrive at the wreckage of the family's farm says there was "nothing left." Medicine Lake resident Brandon French says a pickup was wrapped around a tractor and the basement was just a hole in the ground covered by debris.
