In north we use both words, Diwali/ Divali is simply a contraction of Deepavali :-)

@Jesseybecca Both are correct. The term "Divali" is from Northern part of India while "Deepavali" is from the south. Its the combination of Deepa and Avali.
Deepa means Light and Avali or Vali means Row or Path. So in short it means both "Row of Ligt" or "Path Towards Light".

BTW I love Trinidad & Tobago. I was in Port of Spain a few years back. Where are you located. I never seen anyone celebrate Divali as great as in T&T. So vibrant!
