But isn't gold used in CPU's, other electronic components, mobile phones, space vehicles, medical uses including cancer, glass-making etc... isn't that doing something?

I would take the gold, hire workers to melt it transform it shape it into jewelery, gold bars, coins and sell it at a markup price to make more money...and then buy the 7 exxons and land..

From what I understand, Buffet says he doesn't invest in commodities at all because he can't forecast what they'll do. He invests in businesses because he can gauge whether or not they're likely to do well in the future based on their assets, the lasting appeal of their product, etc.

Buffett is right, in an environment where you don't print money at will. He is also right if he meant that it was all or nothing. However, that is not what honest economists and forecasters are saying. They say diversify, and SOME of that diversification should be some physical gold, with a diversification in custody also.
