humans and dogs have coexisted for thousands of years, enough for dog intelligence to be adapted for human interaction-a dogs understanding of human comands is key to their survival so they would have to be better than chimps. chimps are not stupider, on the contrary- chimps will often solve problems by themselves by first principles-this was how chimps developed tool use; learning from first principles and combinatronics of these principles into methods. chimps can analyse better.

in this test i always wonder if the dogs sense of smell is key to success, or do chimps have the same scent tracking abilities.. (?)

It's a fraud, the dogs are trained and the chimp its not.... just in a case..... every trained animal could do the same as dogs , of course cats, horses, pigs etc.... Why some people trying so hard to proof that dogs are genius and all the other animals just dump. DNA test show that humans share same dna with chimps 98,5% , orangutans 96,7, cats 90% , dogs 75% , chicken 60%............ but dogs are still the only genius in animal planet for the most of men.

@thegraygoo That is called target training. Animals (not just dogs) can be trained to follof a target (finger, target stick) and they are then rewarded.
I don't know if our dogs show learned behaviour or what but they all know that when a human points at something there may be something interesting. They don't understand that when they are very young but get it later. I haven't tested if it is natural for them or have they just learned that if I point at something there may be food.
-
From what they showed, there was no evidence of what they were saying. I am hoping they tried multiple tests, like. Not hiding the food in a cup, but giving the dog the food if they chose the cup that they pointed at.

Humans are the dumbest of all the species.

Ok, first, dogs do not "have to FIND", they crave to, coz its an instinctive mechanism, programmed by nature's own survival rules over long periods of time... (if im wrong, then throw a wet, stinky and scared street cat on the room, and see it the dog will HAVE to do anything u point...)
THE really overall REASON that dogs obey and serve men, it evolution itself, no need to make experiments over their behavior, and come to limited conclusions , trained dogs arent 1% of the dogs..

@maximum411 They were trying to see if dogs were intelligent enough to figure out what pointing MEANS and then act upon the visual clue, they were and did, the chimps were not and didnt.
Dogs being highly trainable indicates intelligence, whether an assistant dog is trained or an obedience trial champion was trained in the use of hand signals or whatever is irrelevant, what IS relevant is the fact they are intelligent enough to figure it out- problem solving and finding solutions.

im sorry but all animals are intelligent. My gerbil knows the sound of the treat bag, she gets annoyed if i dont let her out for a run, she will chew the bars and display behaviour indicating she is annoyed. They learn fast that if you catch them in a tube to be put back in their cage, not to go into the tube so willingly. They also have likes and dislikes, she knows she wont get attention when i go to bed, when the lights are out she heads straight to her bed.obviously not as dumb as ppl think
