We mostly use lures but I've caught pike on most pike baits that you can buy frozen in any good fishing shop. However, you should buy your mackerel or herring from a supermarket - it's cheaper.
You could also catch small rudd, roach and even perch for a cheap bait Tie on some red wool and inject some fish oil as an extra attractant.
