Two pilots were killed after their water-bomber plane crashed in Western Canada on Sunday. The Conair CV-580 airtanker was helping fight a new wildfire when it went down.
A witness described what he saw.
[Ray Garwood, Witness]:
"It looked like he was pretty close to the fire, like on top of the smoke and it looked like the left wing had caught and it just went into a spiral."
Conair vice president said that the 58-year-old captain—who had 26 years experience flying with Conair—and the 36-year-old co-pilot were dropping red fire retardant to put out a new wild fire near Lytton, British Colombia when the accident occurred. [Rick Pedersen, Conair Vice President]:
"It was working on a new fire, it wasn't a previously fought fire and the aircraft during one of its runs impacted the ground."
Some Conair employees are taking the day off to mourn the death of their colleagues.
Dry conditions have made firefighting efforts difficult in Western Canada where wild fires continue to burn.
