Imo when Winston says "we are the dead", yes his refering to the party members as being spiritually dead. But in the definition Alan uses, the 85% proletaria is dead too, because they can't think for themselves either - without strict control. The reference to the party members being the dead is because they don't live their lives, but the proletaria does.
