PlusStudy: Kids' Meals Loaded With CaloriesStudy: Kids' Meals Loaded With CaloriesThe Associated PressHealthy kids' meals at top restaurant chains are slim pickings, according to a report by a nonprofit public health group. (Aug. 4)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:Dateline Washington][Notes:File vid kids menu, restaurants] It's slim pickings for parents looking for healthy kids meals at some popular chain restaurants. [Notes:SOT "Kids diet are still mediocre at best, and rotten at worst."]Many contain **too much** sodium, saturated fat ... and too many calories .... [Notes:SOT "The obesity rates in children have tripled over the last two decades. Yet still the overwhelming majority of children's meals at chain restaurants are too high in calories."] [Notes:logo Center for Science in the Public Interest]That's according to a report by this nonprofit public health group. [Notes:Various shots restaurant exteriors]The report looked into the nutritional quality of kids' meals at 13 major restaurants chains. [Notes:On screen graphic]93 percent of those meals exceeded 430 calories .... [Notes:SOT "At KFC, Sonic, Jack in the Box, Chick-Fil-A, and Taco Bell ... each possible children's meal exceeded the calorie recommendations. At Burger King and McDonalds ... it was close ... 90% of the children's meals were too high in calories."]That's one-third of what the National Institute of Medicine recommends children four through eight should consume in a day. The report also found nearly half of children's meals exceed recommendations for saturated and trans fat. And nearly 90 percent of kids' meals were high in sodium. [Notes:SOTS "Children's diets are too high in calories, too high in saturated fat, too high in salt .. exactly the kind of diet that the surgeon general has said 'don't eat.']Spokepeople for Sonic, K-F-C and Jack-in-the-Box say either they **already** offer healthy alternatives for kids ... Or **plan** to add healthier side items.Calls to other restaurants included in the study were not immediatly returned. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)
