This video was taken at the 100th years of Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb event on the 20th August 2005. I spotted it being pushed round the back of the paddock and followed.......the video really doesn't do justice to the racket it makes!

  • Is/was this car from Nick Mason's collection? You should all get his book/CD "Into the Red". It features two Donington laps with one of these, mic placed in the pitlane. It howls past twice - you'll wonder what hit you when you crank it up!

  • @rustinpieces this is the Hall & Hall car that i think normally lives at the Donington collection.

Into the Red is a fantastic book :)

  • what RPMs is he reving on in this video

  • @Rabelius the slide -type rev counter goes up to 13,000 - I think they were getting to about 10,000 on that day as it wasn't quite running on all cylinders at all times!

  • I need awet towel!!!

  • @RSOxford even when the car was brand new it didnt always run on all 16 because of the high rpms the magneto would fail after a few moments at operating rpms (8000-12000)

  • @66606cl66 this one is a v16, a more stable configuration for high rpm, but as the cosworth first turbocharged 4 pot, it is unreliable, good for half a race then it broke down.

this engine was way over it's time, but the materials were the main flaw.

  • how can brm get 13,000 rev's, but cosworth struggled to get beyond 10,500 with their first turbo straight-4?

  • @elmerexpress Jackie Stewart hated the H-16 (Hawker Typhoons in WW2 used the Napier Sabre H-24 which commonly failed), he even remarked that it should have only been used as a boat anchor!! The beautiful V-16 seen here has pistons the size of egg cups, it is this and the Porche 917 which are my favourite race cars

  • They need to put this in Forza 4

  • i wish i was the last person on earth so i could steal it.

  • Errrr - as I can remember Formula 1 changed from 1.5L to 3L engines way-back-when. Then BRM did in fact build together 2 1.5L V8's into a 3L H16. I think that was for budget reasons - they could not afford to develop an entirely new engine. The difference between V16 and H16 should then be a common crankshaft hooking together the 2 V8 crankshafts? Or did this thing happen at a later stage?

  • An actual V16 :D Not two V8s bolted together.

There are a couple asses on here with videos of "V16" hotrods that consist of two V8 engines bolted together. Piss, moan and argue all you want, that's still not a V16 engine.

  • @RSOxford It seems it always does that. With the design and 2 distributors. It never wants to run on all cyls.
