  • 4:48, my jaw dropped. I wanna try this! would it be the same process with hemp?

  • Hello,

Thanks sooooo much for posting this tutorial. I have been wanting to learn this for a long time.

I have searched the web and youtube especially for a while now and finally found this. Thanks for offering it to all who are looking for it. I am searching for a better term than "survival skills" for this kind of information/teaching. It is such a compassionate way to co-exist with all of life on the planet. It is so real.

    Thanks again, Cairn

  • Please tell me where in the Northeast (R.I. primarily) I can find and identify dogbane. Also, how to take precautions to avoid the toxin.

    Thanks.

    Cairn

The dogbane stalks in the video are Apocynum cannabinum L. The best time to gather dogbane is in the fall, when all of the leaves have dropped and the stalk is a rusty brown color. Usually it is between November and early December.

  • @gearysveggies

The stinging nettle stalks should be gathered in the fall before the first rains. The plant goes dormant and looses it's leaves during this time of the year. The bare stalk are ready to be processed when they are gathered only in the fall. Don't gather the plant when it is still green.

  • very cool thanks for the great demo, have heard of dogbane, but never used it. I may try this method with hibiscus fiber!

  • with stinging nettle should you dri the whole stock? or retrieve the fibers and dry them?

  • thanks, that was very helpful. i assume that is spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium) in the video. am i right? in the northeast i only see indian hemp dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum). i've made good cordage with that, but my method was far less efficient than this one. do you have any idea what the indicators are when the time is right to harvest it? i know around here you're supposed to do it in the fall, but i don;t know exactly when. knowing what to look for on the plant would help.
