Movimiento Cultural Cristiano's not-so-merry Christmas (1/3)

Part of the leftist Movimiento Cultural Cristiano's protest amidst Madrileños' Christmas celebrations and the surge in excessive, Christmas-induced consumerism.

The leftist Movimiento Cultural Cristiano (http://www.solidaridad.net/) and its supporters marched from Plaza de España to Plaza Puerta del Sol in central Madrid on 19 December 2010 calling for "Justica Norte-Sur", or "North-South Justice".

Protesters raised banners calling for an immediate end to child labour; forced labour; exploitation and mistreatment of immigrants; excessive consumerism; capitalism; enslavement of both a poor South and a consumerist North; the sex industry; exploitation of workers; censorship and free expression violations and other violations of human rights by capitalist businessmen and multinational corporations. They also commemorated the "death of cultures and nations" at the hands of capitalist expansion.

The organisers staged a dramatic performance in which Christmas songs were played with lyrics distorted. Mr. Capitalism/Euros was singing to his two victims: exploited and forced labourers and his enchained consumers. In the performance, the shortcoming and violations of human rights, dignity and communal welfare by capitalism were enumerated as the acting capitalist forced his labourers to work and strangled his consumers with the chains of consumerism.

The protesters specifically drew attention to El Cortes Inglés and other chains and corporations whose sales over the festive period treble thanks to the season's excessively consumerist nature.
