Leonard Pennario was the first pianist after Rachmaninoff himself to record all four of Rachmaninoff's piano concertos, in addition to the "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." As a boy in Buffalo, he met Rachmaninoff, and as a mature artist, his affinity with the older master was such that the conductor Leopold Stokowski wrote to him: "Dear Mr. Pennario, Your performance last night of Rachmaninoffs Variations on a Theme of Paganini was so powerful and brilliant that it reminded me of the composers playing of this beautiful music.
Pennario's 1959 performance of Rachmaninoff's towering Third Piano Concerto, recorded with Walter Susskind and the all-star London Philharmonia, is a hallmark. It is the only "Rach 3" in Fanfare Magazine's Hall of Fame. It spotlights the unique warmth, fire and virtuosity that made Pennario the best-selling classical pianist of the LP era and also the favored pianist of the great violinist Jascha Heifetz, who teamed up with him for a series of concerts and Grammy-winning recordings.
