Comparison of a conventional hard drive (Seagate Momentus 7200.4) and the new hybrid hard drives, combining a small 4GB SLC SSD and a regual hard disk into one physical disk (Seagate Momentus XT 500GB).
Used System: Apple MacBook 13,3 Unibody (late 2008)

  • I think it's better if we call it HHD. same as SSD

  • @sizzlinpop Have it, works great.

  • Hey hey, I always admire this hybrid SSHD because instead of having SSD + HDD wouldn't it be smart to have SSD + SSHD? :3

  • I've installed a 500gb momentus xt hdd on my mid 2009 matchbook and strongly recommend it. On a 7200RPM conventional hdd my boot time was around 50sec and now it's 30sec on the hybrid hdd. That's a pretty sweet gain for the price.

  • Could I please ask an urgent question?

Are boot up speeds for the computer & applications the only things that are faster with the hybrid drive?

Upgrading my HD & deciding between the bigger Seagate momentus 750GB or the hybrid momentus 500GB shown here & would appreciate any advice please.

I rarely shut my MBP down & keep my main apps. open, so unless other tasks are faster, faster boot times are little value to me & I'll choose the 750GB bigger HD.

    2007 MBP 17" 2.4Ghz. Thanks

Theres nothing wrong with the macbook. If you read the description at the beginning of the video, he states that he had certain apps open during boot, probably setup through a script, thats why it was taking longer.

  • @harryconic No I'm serious. Maybe over a minute after a few years and it's clogged up with loads of crap but fresh install definitely not. Just take a look at this. Search: New MacBook Aluminum VS iMac - Boot Speed

  • @MikeJ1066 : LOL...!!!! NEVER.

    I have a Macbook 2.2 GHz C2D with WD500BEVT

and a Macbook Pro i7 with Stock HDD

AND NON IS BOOTING UP under one minute with fresh installation.

    OSX is slow at booting!

  • @ChromeSGU What?
