  • This is much lower than the background in Denver.

    Crestone must be at a lower elevation.

    Crestone is higher altitude than Denver at 8000' feet where Denver is much lower at

    5280 feet.

    Background radiation increases with elevation. It must be that be that your counter isn't as sensitive as his.
