Former UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya emphasises that he has absolutely no intention of formulating an alternate UNP.
Several media reports had claimed that MP Jayasuriya and MP Sajith Premadasa are to hold a press briefing today (Jan. 25) on formulating an alternate UNP.
Speaking to 'Srilankamirror' on this regard, MP Jayasuriya said that he does not belong to either the said 'Ranil group' or 'Sajith group' and his sole intention was to unite the UNP and take it to power.
It is with this intention that he and Sajith Premadasa are holding a press briefing today at the Bodhi Ranasinghe Foundation in Narahenpita, he added.
However, the Working committee of the UNP decided on Jan. 16 that no active party member should convene meetings or issue media statements without prior party approval.'
The UNP WC empowered the party leader to even suspend the membership of the errant activists.
This was also approved by UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadasa at the meeting.
