I was thinking about my goals for 2012. I don't have many, but one of them definitely is - to be one of the top stairs (step) climbers on the planet by the end of 2012.

It might be an out-of-reach goal, but at this point - I don't think so. I have a good base of climbing steps over the past 4 years and have climbed over a million up and a million down - many times I climbed at speed. I'll need to lose about 10 kg to start going faster, and try many new techniques like those the top 10 stair climbers in the world are using... but, I think it can be done.

I've changed my diet and will begin losing the pounds over the next month, two months. No rice for dinner - just vegetables or fruit. Giant breakfast. Decent sized lunch. 1 workout per day. Some cross-training.

Apparently the best of the best use their arms to pull themselves up the stairs on the railing. I've not done this much at all in the past 4 years and can probably count the number of times I did on my ears. About twice. I tried it yesterday and though my arms are weak for this exercise, I noticed a significant speed increase on the climb. Already some great news.

I'll judge my speed and abilities across short and long climbs and see how I measure up against the best of the best in the sport in terms of speed. I won't have the luxury of traveling all over the world to attend stair climbing events and get points - so I'll not be competing directly with the best - which will hurt, but at least I can look at my times and see where I stand in comparison.

I'm 45 now, and most of the best are in their 30's and 40's. Funny it's that way, maybe everyone with real strength, stamina, cardiovascular endurance - are all running or riding bikes. LOL. Whatever, I'll see what I can do.
