The Indian government is ramping up efforts to fingerprint and iris scan the entirety of its 1.2 billion citizens in an ambitious scheme to issue national ID cards with biometric details. The plan has so far already enrolled 110 million people and issued 60 million numbers, with the aim of enrolling 200 million by this March and 600 million by 2014.

Find out about the history and consequences of biometric ID this week on GRTV - Behind the Headlines.

  • This is sick, we got RFIDs in germany allready, they don't like my microwave

  • @888Quetzalcoatl888 I agree. A healthy society wouldn't institute policies of this nature. However, RazClaw was wondering why its such a big deal. He or she doesn't recognize the danger. My hope was that RazClaw and others like minded will consider all the ramifications of granting so much authority/control to a government.

  • @doverlin in a society that was genuinly healthy for it;s people non of this would be necesary anyway...the two ideas are poles apart....

  • @edstar83 yeh it's totally fucked up...this is real evil...a technologically advanced race of scum abusing the impoverished masses...mama mia these retards need to rot somewhere....a long way away....what scum

  • @RazClaw What you are missing is this:

As long as governments are working in your behalf, the scheme is beneficial. However, governments are notorious throughout history of becoming corrupt and thuggish in nature. How much power and control will you grant a government? Remember, governments are instituted among men and women to serve all of us. Should your government become fascists/dictatorial/police-state in nature, your chance of redress is diminished.

  • India is becoming a "surveillance state" as mentioned in the clip. The people want a measure of privacy.

  • @RazClaw Well, they did say that the Indian Government is known to be very corrupt. As an Indian's personal info can be sold to a bidder. As u can see, those Indian citizens are looking to boycott and protest. This is, globalization.

  • Honestly i don't see what the big deal is here. Do these cards actually locate people?

If it's just fingerprints and pictures of eyes, wouldn't it make easier to catch criminals? It would make identity theft harder? What am i missing?

  • @jaideepbs Good idea. Not in Canada....yet.

  • disgusting & revolting, we are NOT UPC coded box of Cheerios on a shelf
